Balinese smoothies good for the mind and body
I retreat to Bali on a bi-monthly basis, it’s a sweet haven for me to visit my family and work on the next season’s exciting collection! It’s hard not to be inspired surrounded by tranquil beaches, quirky cafes selling every kind of goddess bowl imaginable and not to mention the divine spirit encompassing the Balinese people!
The best thing about Bali? Hands down, the smoothies! They’re the perfect blend to wake up to and I just love sipping one out in the garden whilst sketching. So straight from the Balinese cafes, I’ve brought you two of my favourite smoothie recipes for you to try at home. Cheers to the sunshine!
Indonesian Durian Smoothie
The feel-good smoothie jam-packed with phytonutrients that are key in raising your levels of serotonin, essential for a healthy and happy mood. This smoothie comes with a safety warning; the Durian fruit is known to smell horrendous but I assure you it tastes delicious!
1 cup of durian fruits
Juice of half a lemon
1 tbsp. condensed milk
1 1/2 cups ice cubes
1/2 cup water
Mint leaves to serve
Chop the banana, durians and pineapple into small pieces and place in a blender and pulse for two minutes.
Add the milk, lemon and ice cubes and pulse for a further minute.
Continue to add water at intervals depending on how thick you desire your smoothie.
To finish, pour into a Kilner handled jar and serve with mint leaves on top.
Balinese Asam Kunyit Smoothie (Turmeric Juice)
This smoothie is an acquired taste but I love the blend of sweet and spice, the perfect cleansing juice if you’re in need of a detox. Turmeric is known for its curing ailments, particularly inflammatory illnesses due to its plant pigment and its high levels of curcumin (yellow colour).
1 tbsp. ground ginger
Juice of 1 orange
1 tbsp. honey
A pinch of black pepper
1/2 tbsp. turmeric
2 cups coconut water
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Chop carrots into medium pieces and place in blender. Pulse for a minute.
Mix remaining ingredients into blender and pulse until smooth.
To finish, pour into a tumbler glass and serve with a slice of orange or cucumber.
